All provisional licenses are issued for 12 months. A provisional license cannot be renewed. The Provisional licensee must pass their credentialing exam within the 12 months of issuance in order to upgrade to a Category F license upon passage of the CNS exam for just the balance of the issuance fee, which is $115.

If the exam is not passed within 12 months, the provisional license will expire and the provisional license will become unlicensed and may not apply for licensure until they pass the CNS exam and apply as a Category F applicant for the full fee, and the background check must be redone.

Category G Applicant Process/Expectations
+

Applicants for licensure should be aware that licensure in North Carolina is currently not by endorsement of the CNS credential. Rather, the law requires the Board to independently review an applicant’s academic program and supervised practice program to ensure both have met the law’s requirements.

Once an application is deemed administratively complete, it will be reviewed by the Education Committee, then put forward at the Board’s next regularly scheduled Board meeting. The Board meeting schedule can be found here.
