Inactivate/Relinquish a License

Inactive Status

Inactive status is only available to those who are currently “Active” with an expiration date of March 31st of the current year. Inactive status puts your license on “hold” (you do not pay the yearly renewal fee) until the time you wish to reactivate, but, you must be maintaining your credential (RD, CNS, etc.) while Inactive. Upon reactivation, you only pay the current year’s renewal fee. While Inactive, you may not provide medical nutrition therapy in NC, or utilize any of the protected titles.

How do I request Inactive Status?

Please log into the NCBDN Gateway, click on your active license, and select “Inactivate” under your Options. Answer the attestations and submit the request. Inactive Status is effective upon the date of submission.

What if I’m retiring? Or I know I will not be practicing again in NC?

Relinquished status is the correct choice if you have retired from practice such that you are no longer maintaining your credential, or you believe you will not return to practice dietetics and/or nutrition in NC again. Once relinquished, should you want to practice dietetics and/or nutrition in NC again, you will have to reapply for the full fee and complete a fingerprinted criminal background check.

Relinquish a License

All status changes can be completed in the NCBDN Gateway. Please log in, click on your license, and on the following page, under “Options,” choose what is applicable and complete the process through submission.
