Military Trained Dietitians & Spouses of Active Military

In order to become a military dietitian, one must become a Registered Dietitian, registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration. For a PDF summary page of the ways to qualify for a North Carolina license, please click here.

Fee Waiver Information

If you are a military-trained dietitian/nutritionist; or you are a dietitian/nutritionist or nutritionist who is licensed in another state and the spouse of an active-duty member of the military, you may be exempt from paying initial licensure fees ($210) (however, you will be responsible for the background check fee ($38) and annual renewal fees ($95/year).

The NCBDN recognizes NC General Statute § 93B-15.1 and the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) and will work with qualified individuals to implement their provisions in the best interest of the applicant. Noted below is documentation that will be needed, depending on your situation. For questions or to request further information please contact our office: info@ncbdn.org or 919-388-1931.

Fee Waiver Documentation

If applicant is a military-trained dietitian:

  • Documentation of your current military occupational specialty as a Dietitian (or DD214 with specialty, if applicable).

If applicant is the spouse of an active-duty military member:

  • Documentation of a currently active out-of-state license for dietetics/nutrition
  • Documentation of your spouse’s active-duty orders/status
  • Copy of marriage certificate
Scope of practice:

If the below provisions are met:

  • You hold an active, out of state license in good standing;
  • You have moved to another state due to military orders; and
  • You’ve submitted an application through our online portal.

Then, while you await issuance of an NC license, the “covered” out of state license is considered valid for the scope of practice in this State.

Apply Online

Our application process takes place through the NCBDN Gateway. Military or active-duty spouses should NOT pay the licensure fee that will appear the end of the application; contact our office with the supplemental documents noted above, and our staff will edit the amount due. The Gateway provides a single, secure portal for prospective licensees to access all license applications and upload required documentation.
